2014 WINEWISE SMALL VIGNERON AWARDS

BEST OF CHARDONNAY

We’ve sung the praises of Australian chardonnay frequently of late, and this select group justifies our tune. The diversity of styles is as impressive as the overall quality. It’s simply a matter of taking your pick.

2013 Cannibal Creek Chardonnay A bright, well made Gippsland chardonnay in which astute oak handling reinforces the intense cool-area fruit which shows white peach and grapefruit characteristics. The palate certainly delivers in terms of texture and length. ($28.00)
http://www.cannibalcreek.com.au/shop/

2011 Cannibal Creek Chardonnay A second gold medal for this under-rated Gippsland producer. It’s very fresh, offering intense but restrained varietal flavour and a good line of acidity which harmonises perfectly with palate texture and oak. ($28.00)

Great results for us at The 2014 Gippsland Wine Show 9 wines entered 8 awards!

Right across South Eastern Australia, the cool vintage resulted in excellent white wines, typically made - as here - with high levels of natural acidity, and often a desirable edge to the fruit on the bouquet (again, as here). The heart of this wine is the power and intensity of its grapefruit-accented palate.

Cannibal Creek, Chardonnay, 2011
Note:
A lovely wine, heap in fresh chardonnay fruit character. With melon, ripe pear and hints of fig and spice. Gentle quality oak builds texture and complexity on the palate with white peach and touches of fig and grapefruit. Not raw or over assertive, perhaps ‘generously elegant’ would be the best way to describe it.

 Drinking Range: 2013 - 2019

Score: 93

Cannibal Creek Chardonnay 2011

Lemon, spice, white pepper, white peach. A fine boned style, with a firm hit of acidity, though it remains calm and cool through out – even has a little cream and glossiness. Good level of flavour – all lemon and grapefruit and spice – a rain-washed delicacy and a finish of good length. 92 or 93 I had. Never decided.

Cannibal Creek, Sauvignon Blanc, 2013

Wonderful and always. Cannibal Creek manage to seamlessly unite sweet, somewhat pungent tropical fruits, with floral / herbaceous tones and substantial mouth feel. Long and juicy, underpinned by vibrant acidity and finishing with a long talc-like texture. Lovely!

Finely crafted, low yielding, and wonderfully fresh. A well compiled mix of searing Chardonnay fruit character, yeasty / brioche complexity and floral tones. Solid mousse, sour, bright and long.

Clear green straw. This classy offering shows both restraint and character. Melon, peach, and undertones of cinnamon and quince combine seamlessly with generous oak. Finishes with minerality and focus.

What the Wine Writers say
Jeremy Oliver...

'there isn't a lot of Australian varietal sauvignon blanc of international standard,
but Cannibal Creek makes a wine of intense passionfruit and gooseberry
flavour
and nervy acidity...It's one of the few Australian makers whose
sauvignon blancs can rival the best from Marlborough in New Zealand.
Jeremy Oliver, The Australian Wine Annual, 2010

Cannibal Creek 2011 Sauvignon Blanc. 94/100.....Stylish, long and briney, this intense, pristine sauvignon blanc has a perfume of white flowers, lychees, passionfruits and gooseberries backed by a light grassiness and a hint of tropical fruit. its stylish and streamlined palate delivers a persistent core of juicy flavour supported by a fine mineral undercarriage and finishing with tangy, lemony acids. Likely to age well. Jeremy Oliver 2012

Winewise

2010 Cannibal Creek Pinot Noir
Here we have the serious emergence of a quiet achiever. The winery is situated in Gippsland, about 12km east of Pakenham, and quality has been on a steady upward curve. This yet to be released pinot is fragrant, long-flavoured and finely structured. The palate is impressively linear and supple. GOLD Winewise 2011

2009 Cannibal Creek Chardonnay
Gippsland is beginning to look like chardonnay territory. This wine is youthful, varietal and complex-clearly of cool region origins. The palate is totally harmonious, with oak and barrel ferment complexity singing background to the fruit. GOLD Winewise
